July 3, 2020
Summary: A zone of upper level high pressure stretches from the southeast U.S. to another high off the southern California coast. The marine layer remains fairly shallow with the latest sounding at Monterey indicating a depth of 1,200 feet. We remain under the balancing act between low pressure covering western Canada and the Pacific Northwest and that high to our south and southeast. On Tuesday, a weak trough will move through northern California, briefly deepening the marine layer and increasing the onshore flow. This will allow a shallow burst of modified sea breeze to move into the valley. The combination of weaker pressures aloft and the marine influence will allow temperatures to fall back four to five degrees Tuesday.
As the week progresses, however, a classic summertime high configuration will begin to evolve with upper level high pressure centering over the Four Corners region by Friday. The flow aloft, which is currently out of the west, will become southerly over southern California and south/southwest over central California. This may begin to allow a minimal amount of monsoonal moisture to move northward into at least southern California. The southwestern high will lead to a blistering heat wave over the southwest and southern California where temperatures may approach 120 over the lower deserts this weekend.
Medium range models continue to indicate the southwestern high will remain in place with triple digits beginning Friday and lasting well into next week.
Forecast: Clear skies through Thursday night. mostly clear and hot Friday through Monday with occasional high clouds.

Two Week Outlook: July 13 through July 19: This model indicates upper level high pressure will cover much of the western U.S. with the exception of the Pacific Northwest. This pattern will continue a dry southwesterly flow aloft along with marginally above average temperatures.
July: This model indicates warmer than average temperatures over the next four weeks. The usual dry pattern will prevail in the San Joaquin Valley with the chance of precipitation on any given day being almost nil. Average precipitation for the month is .01.
July, August, September: This time of year, the 90 day out look is no secret. July and August will be hot and dry while September has a minor risk of precipitation, mainly from the tropics. This out look appears fairly typical. Marginally above average temperatures are expected with near average precipitation, which is a meaningless projection.
Winds Discussion: Winds will be generally out of the northwest this afternoon and tonight at 8 to 15 MPH with locally stronger gusts. Gusts to near 25 MPH will be possible this evening through Tuesday in western Fresno and Kern Counties and portions of Kings County. Winds Tuesday night through Thursday will be generally out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 mph and generally at less than 7 MPH during the night and early morning hours.
Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
