Forecast

July 29, 2020/report

July 29, 2020

Summary:  Strong high pressure at the upper levels of the atmosphere is parked right over southern California this morning.  the high also extends eastward into the Desert Southwest and off shore southern California.  Central California is on the far northwest flank of the high, resulting in triple digit temperatures through at least Monday.  The Delta region and parts of Merced County may see a bit of moderation today.  The marine layer has deepened to 1,800 feet.  Winds at Pacheco Pass are gusting to 23 MPH and are sustained at 23 MPH at Travis Air Force Base.  The air aloft is certainly warm.  The latest balloon sounding above Oakland indicated the freezing level is up to 17,000 feet. The high will not move much over the next four or five days.  After Monday, a weak trough moving into the Pacific Northwest will begin to flatten the high, resulting in a minor cooling trend.  The winds aloft, although weak, will remain out of the southwest, so no challenges from the monsoon for now.

Forecast:  clear and hot through Saturday.  Mostly clear and hot Saturday night through Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook:  August 5 through August 11:  Upper level high pressure will be entrenched over the Desert Southwest.  The monsoon will be active over Arizona and possibly even into southern California.  Temperatures under this regime will run marginally above average with no rain expected.

August:  Typically, especially this time of year, long range outlooks by NOAA reflect the global warming madness.  This model indicates above average temperatures and largely dry conditions.

August, September, October:  Just like the 30 day outlook, this longer range outlook reflects above average temperatures everywhere, including California.  This model does not reflect either above or below average precipitation, although as we head into September we will have to keep a closer eye on the tropics.

Winds Discussion: Winds through this evening will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with stronger gusts, mainly along the west side.  Winds Thursday through Saturday will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 MPH, becoming light and variable during the overnight hours.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
