July 30, 2020
Summary: Central California is on the northwest flank of a strong upper high centered over Arizona and southern California. Intense heat will continue over the deserts of southern California with hottest locations teasing with the 120 degree mark Friday and Saturday.
Not quite that hot on the valley floor, but widespread triple digits will continue through the weekend. The marine layer has deepened to just about 2,000 feet. Modified marine air is moving through the Delta where winds at Travis Air Force Base are out of the southwest, sustained at 21 and gusting to 28 MPH. Further south at Pacheco Pass, winds are out of the southwest at 12 MPH. there may be enough modified sea breeze to drop temperatures in Merced County down into the 90s, however no impact will be felt over the central or south valley. The freezing level remains very high with the early morning sounding above Oakland indicating a freezing level of 16,800 feet.
The hot weather will begin to back off a bit Monday and if not Monday for sure Tuesday. Most models are portraying a weak trough moving through the Pacific Northwest and northern California. The high over the southwest will be suppressed further south, so the combination of lowering pressures aloft and increasing onshore flow should lower readings into the mid to upper 90s by midweek. No sign of any challenges from the monsoon as a dry southwesterly flow aloft will continue for the next 5 to 7 days.
Forecast: clear and hot through Monday. Clear with a slow cooling trend Tuesday through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook: August 6 through August 12: This model is indicating a weak trough of low pressure will be dominant along the west coast, resulting in near to marginally below average temperatures. A dry southwesterly flow will continue.
August: Typically, especially this time of year, long range outlooks by NOAA reflect the global warming madness. This model indicates above average temperatures and largely dry conditions.
August, September, October: Just like the 30 day outlook, this longer range outlook reflects above average temperatures everywhere, including California. This model does not reflect either above or below average precipitation, although as we head into September we will have to keep a closer eye on the tropics.
Winds Discussion: Winds through this evening will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with stronger gusts, mainly along the west side. Winds Friday through Sunday will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 MPH, becoming light and variable during the overnight hours.
Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
