8/5/2020/report

August 5, 2020

Summary:  Infrared satellite imagery is quite telling at this hour.  Coastal low clouds have spread inland as far as the last range separating the Coast Range from the valley floor.  Low clouds are also evident moving up the Delta into the lower Sacramento Valley.  The marine layer has deepened to 2,800 feet and at that depth, it is having no challenges moving over the Coast Range and into the valley.

As a result, look for noticeably cooler temperatures today and Thursday.  Readings will top out at no higher than the low 90s this afternoon with most locations only reaching the upper 80s Thursday.  This refreshing change is brought about by a weak upper low which is now moving into northern and central California.  This system is completely dry, but at this time of year it can bring brief breaks from the relentless valley heat.

The low will begin to weaken Friday then will retrograde off shore over the weekend as upper level high pressure, currently over New Mexico, begins to expand back towards the coast.  That action will shut off the marine machine Friday through Monday as temperatures again top out in the upper 90s to near 100 this weekend.  Some models project another weak low will approach the northern California coast by Tuesday or Wednesday of next week, resulting in another minor cooling trend.

Forecast:  Clear skies and cooler through Thursday.  Clear skies will continue Thursday night through Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook:  August 12 through August 18:  This model is indicating a weak trough of low pressure will be dominant along the west coast, resulting in near to marginally below average temperatures.  A dry southwesterly flow will continue.

August:  Typically, especially this time of year, long range outlooks by NOAA reflect the global warming madness.  This model indicates above average temperatures and largely dry conditions.

August, September, October:  Just like the 30 day outlook, this longer range outlook reflects above average temperatures everywhere, including California.  This model does not reflect either above or below average precipitation, although as we head into September, we will have to keep a closer eye on the tropics.

Winds Discussion: Winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH through Thursday.  Gusts to near 30 MPH will be possible along the west side today and tonight, mainly along the Interstate 5 corridor.  Winds Friday through Saturday will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH afternoons and evenings and 3 to 6 MPH nights and early mornings with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
