September 8, 2020/report

September 8, 2020

Summary:  Believe it or not, snow is flying over much of the states of Colorado and Wyoming this morning as a vigorous cold low drops southward from western Canada into Idaho.  This low will slide southward into Utah and Arizona Wednesday.  as hot as it was yesterday, believe it or not all the smoke in the air did manage to keep readings down somewhat.  Merced was the hottest location in the valley at 110 while the central coast was brutalized with 117 at Paso Robles and 109 at San Simeon.  Even downtown San Francisco hit an even 100.

The heat wave has passed now as a strong off shore flow is generated by that low over the interior west.  Some locations this afternoon may not even hit the century mark.  All this is due to synoptic cooling and has nothing to do with the marine layer which is only at 1,300 feet this morning.

This week will be very different from the past week with temperatures falling to near average by midweek and remaining there through Friday.  A moderate warming trend will begin this weekend as upper level high pressure again builds over California.  The main nemesis will be all that smoke aloft.

The pattern for the first half of the week one resulting in extreme fire danger in many parts of
California.

Forecast:  Mostly clear through Friday. Mostly clear Saturday through Tuesday.
