September 12, 2020
Summary: Visibilities this morning from Visalia south are running about 6 miles. Further north, the visibility at Fresno was 4 miles and at Madera just a mile and a half. The smoke over central California continues to play havoc with temperature forecasting. High temperatures the past few days have been anywhere from 7 to 12 degrees below model guidance. Also, ET rates have dropped well below average for mid September. The winds aloft are very weak but are generally out of the northeast, continuing to send copious amounts of smoke over the valley and at ground level.
It appears help is on the way. By Monday afternoon, a trough of low pressure will be approaching the Oregon/northwest California coast. The counterclockwise circulation around the low will turn the winds aloft out of the southwest, meaning the bulk of the smoke will move into Nevada. Along with improved air quality next week will be warmer temperatures, at least through Wednesday. As the trough moves through the Pacific Northwest and northern California Thursday and Friday, marine air will spread inland, moving temperatures down again to at least near average if not marginally below. The southwesterly flow will also allow very dry conditions to continue through at least next weekend.
Forecast: Mostly clear but hazy through Sunday. Mostly clear Monday through Saturday.
