Summary: Light showers have spread over northern California as far south as San Jose along the coast and Stockton inland. Lift is aiding in light showers spreading down the Sierra Nevada as far south as the higher elevations of Madera County. Doppler radar clearly shows light showers trying to move into the valley, but essentially dissipating once they move as far south as Merced County due to lack of upper air support. The Pacific Northwest is getting pounded by this storm with strong winds and heavy rain. The northwest coast and the Mount Shasta/Siskiyou region will also do well by the time this system winds down early Saturday morning.
From Saturday through Monday night, a zonal flow, or westerly flow, will set up in the upper atmosphere over the off shore waters of California eastward into the Great Basin. A weak area of upper level high pressure will center over northern Baja and southern California, driving the storm track further north.
Models are finally showing a bit more consistency in handling a trough of low pressure moving inland this coming Wednesday and Thursday. It does appear possible that showers could reach as far south as Kern County, especially late Wednesday into Thursday. By Friday, the trough will have moved into the Great Basin followed by dry weather next weekend.
Forecast: Mostly cloudy tonight and Saturday morning with a small chance of sprinkles or isolated light showers, mainly from Fresno County north. Becoming mostly clear Saturday afternoon through Monday. Partly cloudy Monday night through Tuesday. Increasing cloudiness Tuesday night leading to a chance of showers Wednesday through Thursday evening. Mostly to partly cloudy later Thursday night and Friday.

Winds: Winds during the afternoon will be variable to no more than 10 MPH. Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally at or less than 5 MPH with extended periods of near calm conditions.
Rain: A few sprinkles will be possible into early Saturday. Dry weather will return Saturday and last through at least Tuesday night. There is a bit more consistency on models regarding a trough of low pressure moving through Wednesday through Thursday. By and large, the farther north you go, the higher the risk of measurable rain, although for now it does look possible for light showers to make it as far south as Kern County. Another impulse may move through Thursday through Thursday evening for another shot at showers with dry weather returning Friday and lasting through next weekend.
Frost: All locations will be above freezing tonight all the way through Monday morning. Coldest river bottom type locations will dip down to 33 to 35 or so Monday and Tuesday mornings, but overall above freezing conditions will continue through next week.
