Forecast

Thanksgiving 2020/pm update

Summary: In the upper levels of the atmosphere, a trough of low pressure is now stretched from northeast to southwest from central Canada to southern California.  At the same time, strong high pressure at the surface continues to build over the Great Basin.  This will allow a robust off shore flow at the surface to continue, cranking up the Santa Ana winds in southern California.  With high pressure over the eastern Pacific building up into southwest Canada, a northeast flow aloft will continue for roughly another 12 hours or so.  The high off shore will begin to shift inland over California Friday, ending the off shore flow by Friday evening.

Dew points this afternoon are generally in the 30s with air temperatures in the mid 50s to near 60 as of 1:30pm.  With not a cloud to be found, strong radiational cooling will set the stage for subfreezing temperatures tonight and each night through at least Sunday night/Monday morning.

Upper level high pressure will remain in place into early next week.

Models are still hinting at some kind of low pressure system being somewhere over or near California.  The placement varies so much from model to model, and model run to model run.  At any rate,  it would have the affect of raising dew points and increasing cloud cover, but for now there’s no reason to believe precipitation is on the horizon.

Forecast:  Clear skies with cold nights through Monday.  Mostly clear Monday night through Thursday.

Winds: Winds through Monday will be variable and generally at or less than 10 MPH late mornings and afternoons and at or less than 6 MPH with periods of near calm conditions nights and early mornings.

Rain:  Expect dry weather tonight and for at least the next 7 to possibly 10 days.

Frost:  Dew points from roughly Porterville south this afternoon are ranging in the low to mid 30s while north of Porterville most locations are reporting dew points in the upper 30s to the lower 40s as of 1:30 this afternoon.  Air temperatures are ranging from the mid 50s to the lower 60s.  the differences in temperatures illustrates well mixing taking place above the valley floor.  With completely clear skies tonight and through the weekend, the stage is set for a strong radiational freeze event beginning later tonight.

Coldest locations will potentially drop to 24 to 26 degrees with most flatland locations ranging from 27 to 30. Hillsides will be in the low to mid 30s.  the inversion tonight will start off weak, but improve near sunrise with temperatures at 34 feet generally 3 to 6 degrees warmer at most locations.

Coldest unprotected low lying regions will drop to freezing around 10:00 to 11:00pm and 28 degrees by 2:00am or shortly thereafter.  They won’t rise to above freezing until 8:30 to 9:00am Friday.

Now that the cool, dry air mass is in place, expect similar conditions Saturday and Sunday mornings with minor modification coming up Monday morning.

We’re now down to 9 hours and 44 minutes of daylight and, with the low sun angle, modifying a dry air mass on the valley floor is a bit difficult.  For now, Tuesday and Wednesday look to be low to mid 30s mornings with the coldest locations possibly in the upper 20s.
