Forecast

June 11, 2021/report

June 11, 2021

Today will be pleasant as opposed to what’s coming down the road.  Readings will jump into the mid 80s with lower 90s Saturday and mid to upper 90s Sunday and Monday.  The freezing level is rising rapidly.  The latest sounding above Oakland indicates a freezing level of 12,400 feet.  Twenty four hours ago, the freezing level was 7,800 feet.  The balloon sounding above San Diego showed a freezing level of 16,000 feet.  Through the weekend, central California will be sandwiched between a low center off the Washington coast and upper level high pressure over northern Mexico.  Over the next 72 hours, the high will drift northward, settling over the Four Corners region Sunday for the beginning of a searing heat wave over the Desert Southwest and southern California.  Blended model information indicates the high will strengthen and expand over California Wednesday.

The high will be quite impressive Thursday through Saturday.  most locations for Wednesday through Saturday will range between 106 and 111.  The flow around the high may move a limited amount of subtropical moisture northwestward into central California for a chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada.  This is quite common during heat waves.

It does not appear any relief from the heat will occur until about Monday the 21st when some models show a trough of low pressure moving into the Pacific Northwest, suppressing the  high southeastward.

Forecast: Clear skies through Tuesday with a warming trend.  Mostly clear and hot  Tuesday night through Friday.

Two Week Outlook:  June 17 through June 23:  this model shows a wide ranging high pressure system over the western US, resulting in above average temperatures and dry conditions.

June:  This model is indicating a ridge of upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the Desert Southwest and, to a lesser extent, California, resulting in above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model mimics the pattern of recent years, indicating high pressure over the Desert Southwest being the most dominant feature, resulting  in above average temperatures.  Theoretically, this pattern blocks monsoonal moisture from moving northward.  Typically, there’s little to no precipitation anyway, and that will be the case this summer.

Winds Discussion:  Winds during the afternoons and evenings will be generally out of the northwest at around 8 to 15 MPH.  Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally at or less than 8 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Monday.
