June 14, 2021/report

June 14, 2021

Temperatures may actually end up two or three degrees cooler this afternoon than Sunday’s highs.  A minor intrusion of modified marine air leaked into the valley overnight.  Temperatures at most locations are ranging 2 to 3 degrees lower than 24 hours ago.  Currently, winds in the Delta are sustained at 18 MPH while further south at Pacheco Pass winds are sustained at 14 MPH, gusting to 23 MPH.  this will keep temperatures near seasonal averages through tomorrow.

The heat belt over the desert southwest is expanding slowly westward, however.  The air aloft is significantly warmer this morning over southern California.  Freezing levels have jumped up to 16,500 feet.  Several days ago, models  began to point to a blistering heat wave for much of California this week.  Unfortunately, models this morning continue that theme.  Temperatures will jump into triple digits Wednesday as the Four Corners high expands westward over California.  For now, it looks like Friday and Saturday may be the hottest days in this extended heat wave.  Blended models indicate a high of 108 Friday in Porterville, 111 Saturday, and 109 Sunday.

The flow aloft over the southern  half of California will be southerly beginning Wednesday night due to the clockwise flow around the southwestern high.  It’s possible enough high level moisture embedded within this flow could set off a few thunderstorms over the summit of the Sierra Nevada late this week and through the  weekend.  It’s possible, however, that the downward  motion of the high may not allow clouds to build high enough.  At any rate, very hot conditions will continue through at least Monday.

By Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, models are rather convoluted.  We may see a weak trough of low pressure attempting to move inland, which could allow at least a minor amount of modified sea breeze down the valley.  For now, though, that’s by no means written in cement.

Forecast: Mostly clear through Tuesday night.  Mostly clear and hot Wednesday.  mostly clear with very hot afternoons Thursday through Monday.

Two Week Outlook:  June 21 through June 29:  this model shows a wide ranging high pressure system over the western US, resulting in above average temperatures and dry conditions.

June:  This model is indicating a ridge of upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the Desert Southwest and, to a lesser extent, California, resulting in above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model mimics the pattern of recent years, indicating high pressure over the Desert Southwest being the most dominant feature, resulting  in above average temperatures.  Theoretically, this pattern blocks monsoonal moisture from moving northward.  Typically, there’s little to no precipitation anyway, and that will be the case this summer.

Winds Discussion:  Winds during the afternoons and evenings will be generally out of the northwest at around 8 to 15 MPH.  Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally at or less than 8 MPH with local gusts to 20 MPH afternoons and evenings along with periods of near calm conditions through Thursday.
