June28 2021 report

June 28 2021

The oddball pattern we talked about Friday and Saturday continues to evolve this morning,,  At the surface, there is enough of a weak onshore flow to allow a shallow intrusion of marine air through Pacheco Pass through the Delta where winds were sustained at 23 MPH and were sustained at 35 MPH.  This may be enough to maintain readings below the century mark from Madera County north while the remainder of the valley will continue to roast.  The winds aloft are becoming out of the east due to a strong high center over central Washington.  Monsoon moisture has moved from east to west. It’s made it as far west as the Sierra Nevada.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will spread over southern California tonight and Tuesday with an easterly flow aloft, sprinkles or isolated thunderstorms will pop up over the valley floor from late today through at least Thursday night.  Most locations will remain dry, however this unusual situation adds enough intrigue to keep a low chance of storms over the valley floor.  From Friday through Sunday, the winds aloft will become southwesterly.  This will nudge the monsoon moisture to the east.

Isolated thunderstorms will be possible later this afternoon and will continue through Thursday night.

Forecast: Mostly clear and hot today.  Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy tonight.  Partly cloudy Tuesday through Thursday night with a small risk of isolated showers and thunderstorms, mainly in the afternoons and evenings.  Becoming mostly clear Friday through Monday and continued hot

Two Week Outlook:  July 5 through July 11:  This model shows an active monsoon into the Desert Southwest and, to a lesser extent, southern California and the Sierra Nevada.  This pattern always offers a small chance of some rain with above average temperatures continuing.

June:  This model is indicating a ridge of upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the Desert Southwest and, to a lesser extent, California, resulting in above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model mimics the pattern of recent years, indicating high pressure over the Desert Southwest being the most dominant feature, resulting  in above average temperatures.  Theoretically, this pattern blocks monsoonal moisture from moving northward.  Typically, there’s little to no precipitation anyway, and that will be the case this summer.

Winds Discussion:  Winds afternoons and evenings will be generally out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with locally stronger gusts through Thursday.  Winds during the night and  morning hours will be generally light and variable and generally out of the northwest.

Rain:  Monsoon  moisture is working from east to west through the Great Basin and has now reached as far west as the Sierra Nevada.  Isolated thunderstorms will begin to percolate over the Sierras later this afternoon. They will become more numerous Tuesday through Thursday night.  with an easterly flow aloft, it’s possible isolated showers or thunderstorms may sustain themselves, even over the valley floor.  Measurable rain at any given location is unlikely, but cannot be ruled out.  From late Friday through the weekend, a dry southwesterly flow will take over, ending the precipitation threat.
