July 2, 2021/report

July 2, 2021

The marine layer at Monterey this morning is 2,500 feet deep, plenty deep enough to affect valley temperatures.  However, the difference in pressure between the coast and the interior is very weak, at best.  The altimeter reading at San Francisco is currently 29.94 inches of mercury while at Vegas 29.83 is the reading.  If anything, temperatures will be a tad warmer today, especially from Madera County north where temperatures yesterday fell into the mid to upper 90s due to marine air gushing through Pacheco Pass.  Winds this morning through Pacheco are west at 16 MPH.  even in the Delta at Travis AFB, winds were out of the south at 18 MPH, considerably weaker than 24 hours ago.  In the broad picture, upper level high pressure is centered over the Four Corners region and connects with another high over the northern Midwest.  California sits on the western edge of this high.  The winds aloft are now turning southeasterly as the clockwise rotation of the high moves moisture from Mexico into southern California.  There will be small chances of isolated thunderstorms over the summit of the Sierra Nevada, otherwise skies will remain mostly clear.

Models show the high remaining over the Desert Southwest through all of next week.  By Friday, t he high will move further west over Utah.  Some models show the high moving directly over California a week from Monday, which would favor temperatures in the 106 to 111 range.

Forecast: Other than a few high clouds, it will be mostly clear and hot through Tuesday.  Mostly clear and hot Tuesday night through Friday.

Two Week Outlook:  July 7 through July 13:  This model shows an active monsoon into the Desert Southwest and, to a lesser extent, southern California and the Sierra Nevada.  This pattern always offers a small chance of some rain with above average temperatures continuing.

July:  The 30 day outlook for July follows the trend set in June with above average temperatures and upper level high pressure that’s stronger than usual.  The typical dry conditions will continue.

July, August, September: Above average temperatures can be expected for the next three months.  This model is given equal chance of rain for not only California but also the parched desert southwest.

Winds Discussion:  During the afternoon and evening, winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH.  During the night and morning hours, winds will be generally at or less than 10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions.
