Today will be a scorcher, however moderation will begin tomorrow as a weak trough of low pressure begins to shift through the Pacific Northwest and into northern California by Friday evening.
The flow between the southwestern high and the low off the north coast has turned the winds aloft southerly over California. Models are picking up on a pretty decent batch of monsoonal moisture which will move through late today through Friday, increasing the chance of thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada. Some models actually give credence to the possibility of a few sprinkles on the valley floor, or possibly even an isolated thunderstorm. The base of the cloud deck will be basically above 13,000 feet. That’s a long way for a raindrop to fall without evaporating.
For today, the air mass is extremely warm. As of 6:00am, Sandberg was reporting 77 degrees and Blue Canyon was at a toasty 78. Obviously, we won’t feel the marine influence today as the current depth is just 1,200 feet. However, as that trough approaches the northern California coast, a shallow intrusion of marine air will flow into the valley along with synoptic cooling, lowering temperatures into the mid to upper 90s.
From the weekend through the middle of next week, a fairly narrow zone upper level high pressure will stretch from the Midwest to off the southern California coast. This will result in very hot weather for the Desert Southwest and southern California with temperatures generally in the mid to upper 90s for the valley.
Forecast: Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy this morning. variable cloudiness later this afternoon through Friday with a slight chance of sprinkles or even an isolated thunderstorm. Clearing Friday night. Mostly clear Saturday through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook: September 16 through 22: Upper level high pressure continues to dominate California and the Desert Southwest, resulting in above average temperatures with little. If any, chance of precipitation.
September: This model indicates high pressure will be dominant over the desert southwest and California. The chance for precipitation will remain very low. Temperatures will be marginally above average.
September, October, November: If this model has any credence, the dominant pattern of the summer will continue. Expect temperatures to be marginally above average as we head into fall. Precipitation will generally be below average, although the chance will begin to increase as we head into November.
Winds Discussion: Winds today will be light and variable, increasing out of the west or northwest at 8 to 15 MPH tonight and Friday with local gusts to 20 MPH. Winds will decrease Friday night, becoming mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 mph Saturday and Sunday and generally at or less than 7 mph during the night and morning hours.
Rain: A batch of monsoonal moisture will move through later today through Friday, resulting in scattered thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada. Some models even project a few sprinkles for the valley floor with the possibility of an isolated thunderstorm. The cloud deck will be based above 13000 feet, so measurable rain is very unlikely at any given location. Expect dry weather Friday night and all the way through next week.
