Forecast

October 14, 2021/report

October 14, 2021

California is sandwiched between two major features.  The first is a big  trough of low pressure covering the interior west.  The second is an equally big  high center over the California coast. The jet stream is fixed between these two features, creating a northwest flow aloft over California.  The air above the valley floor has warmed a great deal with the freezing level over Vandenberg AFB now pegged at 16,700 feet.  The warming trend will continue through Saturday then the intermountain trough of low pressure will begin to shift into the middle of the country.  A weaker trough of low pressure will follow Sunday.  A few showers from this system may spread as far south as a Bay Area/Sacramento line with some increasing clouds over central California and somewhat cooler conditions.  A stronger trough shows up stretching from western Canada to possibly southern California late next week.  Some models show the southern portion of this feature cutting off, forming a cut off low over southern California while others just show a trough.  This will deserve further study.

Forecast:   Mostly clear skies through Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook:  October 20 through the 26:  This model is still strongly suggesting a wet pattern is on hand for the western 1/3 of the US, including central California.  Temperatures will be near to somewhat below average.

Winds Discussion:  Winds during the later morning and afternoon hours will be generally at or less than 12 MPH and generally variable in nature through  Sunday.  Winds during the night and morning hours will be light with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain:  Models this morning are not as bullish on the possibility of rain for central

California between the 20 and 26 even  though they  show a better than even chance  of rain, especially over the northern counties.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
