October 13, 2021

October 13, 2021

Here it is October 13 and 30s are pretty widespread on the valley floor.  As of 6:00am, McFarland had dipped to 31 and Lindsay and Exeter were each at 32.  Yes, it is rare to see frost, even local frost, this early in the season, but it’s not unheard of.  I wish I had the dates in front of me, but I do remember mid 20s about October 27 or 28 a couple of decades ago.

Coldest locations tonight will dip into the mid to upper 30s, however upper air soundings show cooler air aloft will continue under a strong, northwesterly flow aloft.  The freezing level over Vandenburg has risen to 11,800 feet while further north at Oakland, the freezing level is 9,700 feet.  Adding to some moderation during the night and morning hours will be recovering dew points.

Upper level high pressure will begin to move in from the west Thursday for the start of a more significant warming trend.  A trough of low pressure will move through the Pacific Northwest and northern California Sunday and Monday, but any precipitation will remain well to the north.  This trough will shave off temperature expectations again, however.

Models continue to show a legitimate chance of rain over much of the western 1/3 of the US between the 20th and the 26th.  Since models have been pretty consistent on this, we’ll study it closely and keep you updated.

Two Week Outlook:  October 20 through the 26:  This model is still strongly suggesting a wet pattern is on hand for the western 1/3 of the US, including central California.  Temperatures will be near to somewhat below average.

Winds Discussion:  Winds during the later morning and afternoon hours will be generally at or less than 12 MPH and generally variable in nature through Saturday.  Winds during the night and morning hours will be light with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain:  Models for the 20 through the 26 have been consistently showing rain moving into California.  Since they have been fairly consistent, it’s time to call for at least a chance of precipitation for this period.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
