October 18, 2021/report

Once again we apologize.  John had to be rushed to the ER again Friday morning.  Turns out that not only does he have pneumonia, but he also has a pocket of fluid outside the lung that has to be surgically drained.  We’ll keep you posted as further developments come up.

October 18, 2021

A rather compact and vigorous low moved through northern and central California overnight.  The trailing end of the cold front is moving through Kern County at this hour, accompanied by light showers.  This activity will come to an end over the next few hours.  A northwest push of air will move down the valley today, generating upslope clouds against the north facing slopes of the Kern County mountains and the west facing slopes of the Sierra Nevada.  Weak upper level high pressure will fill in behind the exiting storm.  However, this will be a very active weather week for the northern half of California and possibly even southern California by this weekend.

An intensifying low pressure system will develop off the coast of the Pacific Northwest and northern California beginning Wednesday night.  Precipitation will spread over northern California as early as Wednesday evening, giving a chance of showers as far south as Fresno County.  Quantitative precipitation estimates for the Sierra Nevada this week from Yosemite north indicate possibly as much as four inches plus.

The best chance of precipitation for the south valley will be over the weekend as the main body of low pressure shifts inland.  Models  also show tightly knit isobars with this evening, meaning we could see some strong, gusty winds.  If you recall, the two week model was  last week calling for above average precipitation this week.  This same model is depicting above average rain for the northern half of California for next week, as well.

Forecast:   A chance of showers in Kern County for a time this morning, otherwise it will be mostly to partly cloudy through Tuesday.  Increasing cloudiness Wednesday with a chance of showers from mainly Fresno County north.  A slight chance of showers for that same region Thursday.  A chance of showers Friday through Monday, mainly from Fresno County north.

Two Week Outlook:  October 25 through October 31;  This model is showing a moist westerly flow moving across the eastern Pacific into the Pacific Northwest and much of northern and central California.  This model is indicating there’s a 60 percent of above average precipitation with below average temperatures.

Winds Discussion:  Winds through this evening will be out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH at times with stronger gusts.  Winds will be light and variable later tonight through Tuesday night, then will be mainly out of the southeast at 8 to 15 MPH with stronger gusts Wednesday through Thursday.  This note as well:  About Sunday of next week, some models show tightly wrapped isobars between northern and southern California.  Theoretically, this could spawn some strong, gusty winds.

Rain:  Light showers are still occurring at this hour over Kern County, however the low itself is shifting into Nevada so precipitation will come to an end over the next few hours in the south valley.  This will be an active weather week, however.  There will be a chance of showers anytime from late Thursday through Friday with a greater risk of rain over the weekend and into early next week.  Model projects for the Sierra Nevada indicate 4 inch plus totals.  For much of this evening, central California will be on the southern  fringe of this activity, so we’ll have to see just where Mother Nature puts the wet/dry line.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
