Forecast

November 8, 2021/report

November 8, 2021

That stubborn layer of low clouds in the south valley kept temperatures in the upper 50s yesterday afternoon.  Porterville  had a high of 59 with Bakersfield at 58. North of Tulare County, most locations were in the upper 60s. these clouds will mix out during the course of the day as a weather system approaches the northern and central California coast.  The Tehachapi Mountains appear to be the far southern limit of measurable rain. The valley portion of Kern County may pick up a few hundredths, if they pick up anything at all.  From roughly northern Tulare County north, rainfall amounts will generally be around .33 to .25 of an inch.  This will be a fast moving system with precipitation reaching into Madera and Fresno Counties around 8:00am. It’s also a rather complex system.  Currently, the parent low is just off the British Columbia coast with another wave of low pressure forming off the northern and central coast. Since the thrust of this storm is west to east, southern California will remain dry.

High pressure aloft will begin to build northward from its center well off the southern California coast.  The main challenge tomorrow will be trying to outguess the fog and low clouds and their effects on temperatures.

By the weekend, coastal and foothill areas will move into the lower 70s. on the valley floor, readings will be dictated by when fog and low clouds burn off.

The high will be a persistent one, so expect dry weather for the remainder of this week.  For now, it appears next week will be dry as well.

Forecast:   Mostly cloudy south of Fresno County this morning.  Otherwise, increasing cloudiness today.  Cloudy tonight with rain becoming likely after roughly 2:00am.  Showers Tuesday morning, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon.  Mostly cloudy in Kern and Tulare Counties Wednesday, otherwise it will be partly cloudy.  Areas of clouds and fog with clearing in  most areas in the afternoon through Monday.

Two Week Outlook:  November 15 through November 21: This model shows a fairly sturdy ridge of high pressure building along the west coast, driving the storm track into mainly British Columbia and Washington state.   The chance of rain is very low during this time frame with above average temperatures.

November: This model indicates November has roughly a 60% chance of above average precipitation with above average temperatures being the dominant theme.  If this occurs, it will have to be during the second half of the month as current models show dry conditions through mid November.

November, December, January: Well, at least this model doesn’t show the continuance of the blocking ridge of high pressure of recent winters. It indicates an equal chance of below or above average precipitation for central California.  Temperatures will remain somewhat above seasonal average.

Wind Discussion:  Winds will be out of the southeast to east today at 5 to 12 MPH.  later tonight and Tuesday, winds will be out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with stronger gusts, diminishing by late Tuesday evening.  Winds later Wednesday night through Friday will be variable to no more than 10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions, especially during the night and morning hours.

Rain:  The chance of rain will increase after around 2:00am and will continue for a time Tuesday morning.  Expect dry weather later Tuesday  night and for the remainder of the week and probably next week as well.

Rainfall amounts in Madera and Fresno County should tally from .20 to .35.  In tulare County, expect about .20 and over the valley portion of Kern County, a few hundredths may hit the ground with some areas possibly remaining dry.

Frost:  Obviously, the frost season is getting off to a slow start this year.  Currently, I see nothing suggesting a cold pattern on the horizon.
