Whenever drizzle begins to fall out of the fog and low cloud deck, you can bet mixing is taking place above. Two-one hundredths of an inch has been recorded over the past 24 hours at both Porterville and Visalia. Currently, the visibility has improved at Bakersfield. They can see two and a half miles from the tower while Porterville now has a visibility of 5 miles. From Visalia to Stockton, it’s still on the deck as most locations are reporting a quarter of a mile or less.
There is a weak upper low off the southern California coast which is being picked up by a weak long wave trough of low pressure moving into California. This is what is currently creating mixing in the lower level of the atmosphere and will likely cause the fog and low clouds to mix out later today. However, a northwest push of air will move down the valley, possibly forming upslope cloud cover against the north facing slopes of the Tehachapi Mountains and the west facing slopes of the Sierra Nevada late tonight and Wednesday morning.
The air mass now moving in is somewhat colder, so where skies remain clear tonight, low to mid 30s will be possible. On Thanksgiving Day, a low center will develop over Baja with a ridge of upper level high pressure wrapping around the top of the high and into California. This will generate another warm air inversion with the possibility of another strong of days with fog and low clouds. It may be a bit more difficult now for the fog to form again as November, so far, has been completely dry.
Medium range models indicate persistent high pressure will drive the storm track well north of California. The top portion of the high will still break down the first week of December, possibly leading to a chance of rain. For now, though, we’ll emphasize the word possible.
Forecast: Dense fog and low clouds, mainly north of Kern County, clearing this afternoon. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy tonight through Friday with patchy night and morning fog. Widespread fog and low clouds nights and mornings with afternoon clearing into hazy sunshine Friday night through Tuesday.

Two Week Outlook: November 30 through December 6 More and more, the two week model is indicating the storm track will move southward into California. The chance of rain during this period now appears pretty high with above average temperatures.
December: This model indicates temperatures will be marginally above average from southern California into the Desert Southwest with near average temperatures over southern California. Precipitation will continue to be above average over the Pacific Northwest but below average over the southern 2/3 of California.
December, January, February: If this model is to be believed at all, temperatures will be marginally above average over central California. This model also depicts the main storm track continuing into the Pacific Northwest with somewhat below average precipitation over the southern 2/3 of California.
Wind Discussion: Winds tonight through Friday will be generally variable at no more than 10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions.
Rain: It’s possible we may see some spotty areas of drizzle north of Kern County this morning. Otherwise expect dry weather to continue for at least the next week. There’s a chance of precipitation around the 5th or 6th of December, however that is by no means set in cement.
Frost: A somewhat colder air mass will invade central California later today. Mixing is already taking place, clearing some of the fog and low clouds in portions of Tulare County. As the low clouds and fog begin to mix out, widespread mid to upper 30s are possible tonight with low to mid 30s Thanksgiving morning and Friday morning. It’s also possible that the low level moisture trapped on the valley floor may not completely mix out, reforming as ground fog which would keep temperatures at least slightly above freezing. At any rate, there’s no pattern on short and medium range outlooks suggesting sub freezing weather.
