Forecast

December 3, 2021/report

December 4, 2021

There is quite a bit of fog north of Visalia. In fact, Visalia, Madera, and Merced were all reporting a visibility of ¼ mile or less. Ground fog is also widespread over the northern San Joaquin/lower Sacramento Valley. There is a weak upper low off the southern California coast. It’s a dry system, however the circulation around the low is causing high level clouds to rotate over the valley from time to time.

In the broad picture, upper level high pressure runs over the top of the low to our southwest through northern California and the Great Basin. This will ensure one more day of unusually warm weather.

A cooling trend is on the way. As the high flattens out over the weekend and weakens, a weather system will roll southward from just off the British Columbia coast, taking more of an inside track into the Great Basin Tuesday. Central California will be on the far western side of the low, resulting in light showers over the Sierra Nevada, however models show that even up over the high country, precipitation totals will be very low.

There is room for hope, though. Medium range models have been trending toward the possibility of a wet pattern beginning late next week as systems roll out of the Gulf of Alaska towards California

Forecast: Areas of night and morning valley fog and occasional high clouds through Monday night. Variable cloudiness Tuesday with a chance of sprinkles. Partly to mostly cloudy Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Mostly clear to partly cloudy Thursday and Friday with areas of night and morning fog and low clouds.

Two Week Outlook:  December 10 through the 16: More and more, models are indicating an active weather pattern with a good chance of precipitation during this period. These storms will have their origins in the Gulf of Alaska, so expect below average temperatures.

December, January, February: If this model is to be believed at all, temperatures will be marginally above average over central California. This model also depicts the main storm track continuing into the Pacific Northwest with somewhat below average precipitation over the southern 2/3 of California.

Wind Discussion:  Winds tonight through Sunday will be generally variable at no more than 10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain:  A weather system will dive into the Great Basin Tuesday with a good chance of light  showers over the high Sierra. Sprinkles are possible on the valley floor, but nothing measurable is anticipated. Medium range models are pointing to the possibility of an active pattern beginning next weekend. Hopefully we can receive some much needed precipitation.

Frost: All locations will be above freezing.
