Forecast

January 2, 2022/afternoon report

January 2, 2022

The last pockets of fog and low clouds have already dissipated over portions of Tulare, Fresno, and Madera Counties. Hazy sunshine prevails in all  locations with temperatures in the lower 50s as of 1:00pm. Dew points are running ini the upper 30s and lower 40s, roughly where they were 24 hours ago.

In the big picture, two weather systems will try to whittle away through a dome of upper level high pressure over California. The first one will make its attempt Tuesday and Tuesday night with a small chance of a few sprinkles in Merced and Mariposa Counties. However, nothing measurable is anticipated. A similar event will occur Friday into Saturday. Models this afternoon are insisting the rain line will move a bit further north so only Merced and Mariposa Counties will have a small risk of a few light showers. Otherwise, this will be a dry week.

Dew points should begin to creep up beginning Tuesday as a westerly flow takes over behind the Tuesday system. Warm air aloft is already in place, however widespread upper 20s and lower 30s can be anticipated tonight. With clear skies, decent radiational cooling, and a stable air mass will favor temperatures slightly above freezing tonight.

For Tuesday morning, most locations will be above freezing due to moderating daytime temperatures and increasing cloud cover ahead of an incoming mostly dry system. Temperatures Wednesday and on through the weekend will be generally in the mid to upper 50s which are generally above average for early January. Overnight lows will sink into the mid 30s to the lower 40s.

Forecast: Clear skies tonight with areas of dense fog and low clouds developing after midnight. Mostly clear Monday after the fog and low clouds burn off. Mostly clear Monday night with areas of fog and low clouds developing. Variable cloudiness Tuesday and Tuesday night. Mostly clear Wednesday through Thursday night with areas of night and morning fog and low clouds possibly persisting through the day in some areas. Variable cloudiness Friday and Saturday with a slight chance of sprinkles in Merced County, partly cloudy Saturday night and Sunday with areas of dense fog and low clouds.

Lows tonight will mostly range in the upper 20s to the mid 30s. Highs Monday and Tuesday will rise into the mid 50s. overnight lows Monday night will generally range in the mid to upper 30s.
