Surface high pressure over northern Utah is generating an off shore flow which lowered dew points over the valley floor overnight. This allowed temperatures to drop into the low to mid 30s at most locations. In fact, dew points are 4 to 7 degrees lower than 24 hours ago. Fog this morning is mainly up the center of the valley from Bakersfield to Merced. Bakersfield, Visalia, and Lemoore are each reporting a visibility of less than ¼ of a mile while Porterville has a visibility of 10 miles, Fresno 3 and Madera 4.
Looking at the big picture, upper level high pressure covers the eastern Pacific Ocean and much of the western US. A cut off low is located roughly 500 miles southwest of San Diego. The counterclockwise circulation around this feature has the winds aloft out of the east, keeping the off shore flow in the midst of things for the next few days. This will add enough mixing to the lower level of the atmosphere to keep the fog from completely taking over.
Medium range models are still showing a blocking ridge pattern. That cut off low will move inland, but if models are correct, this won’t happen for at least another week. And, when it does push inland, it won’t have enough moisture for precipitation.
Forecast: Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy through next Tuesday with areas of night and morning fog and low clouds each day and with hazy afternoon sunshine.

Two Week Outlook: January 17 through January 23: This model has reverted to a dry forecast with above average temperatures.
January: This model doesn’t really indicate a trend that would favor above or below precipitation. The active storm track in the Pacific Northwest will continue. Both temperatures and precipitation should be close to seasonal averages.
January, February, March: The trend of below average temperatures of late continues on the 90 day forecast which indicates temperatures will be slightly below average. Below average precipitation is anticipated over the Desert Southwest and the southern half of California with near average precipitation from Fresno County north.
Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 6 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Friday.
Rain: Expect dry weather for the next 7 to possibly 10 days.
Frost: Dew points are anywhere from 3 to 7 degrees lower than 24 hours ago. There is fog out there, however it is pretty shallow and there isn’t enough to slow the radiational cooling process. It was a bit of a surprise last night to see temperatures lower into the low to mid 30s at most locations. Lindcove, Exeter, and Sanger were each reporting 29 degrees as of 6:00am. There are various players out there and, with an off shore flow continuing, low to mid 30s are likely again tonight. we are right in between cloud cover over northern California and cloud cover moving into southern California, so…assuming we remaining clear during the overnight hours…expect a similar night tonight. If either of these two cloud sources move in, then milder temperatures can be expected. At any rate, there is no serious cold weather episode on the weather horizon.
