Forecast

January 21, 2022/report

January 21, 2022

Ground fog has been rapidly expanding in coverage the past few hours. Infrared satellite imagery shows extensive fog expanding over Kern and Tulare counties with another finger of fog running roughly parallel to Highway 99 as far north as Merced County. It will e somewhat cooler today due to two factors. Fog may not clear until late afternoon, especially in the south valley. Also, upper level low pressure is digging southward through the Great Basin.

In the big picture, upper level will remain just off the northern California coast with a ridge extending into western Canada.  The low over the Great Basin will set  up shop near the Colorado River Valley tonight and Saturday. The squeeze play between the off shore high will generate strong gusty northeast winds along the Sierra Nevada and later the Kern County mountains. Somewhat drier air could mix down to  the valley floor, allowing temperatures to fall to near freezing in river bottom type location Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Medium range models continue to indicate a blocking ridge will be off the west coast, favoring areas of night and morning valley fog.

Forecast: Outside of areas of night and morning fog and low clouds and occasional high clouds, it will be mostly clear and hazy through next Friday.

Two Week Outlook:  January 28 through February   This model gives a breath of hope for an active pattern to retrn to ccaliornia. Tggone is the gloking riege over the northern portion of the state so we’ll put a chance of rairn in the forecast especially for after the first with somewat below average temperatures.

January:  This model doesn’t really indicate a trend that would favor above or below precipitation. The active storm track in the Pacific Northwest will continue. Both temperatures and precipitation should be close to seasonal averages.

January, February, March: The trend of below average temperatures of late continues on the 90 day forecast which indicates temperatures will be slightly below average. Below average precipitation is anticipated over the Desert Southwest and the southern half of California with near average precipitation from Fresno County north.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 6 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Monday.

Rain:  Expect dry weather for the next 7 to possibly 10 days.

Frost: I’m starting to change my tune on even local frost tonight as fog and low overcast cover most of the eastern and southern portions of the valley. Most locations will be in the mid 30s to even the lower 40s.  still nothing medium range even suggesting a  hard freeze,
