January 22, 2022
Almost all of the fog and low clouds have burned off except for a patch or two in the Hanford area. Satellite imagery this afternoon is quite interesting. It shows mid and high level clouds forming quickly over the Sierra Nevada and blowing off from the northeast to the southwest across the valley floor. This is being brought on by a squeeze play between upper level high pressure off the northern California coast and an upper low which has now dropped to a position over extreme southern Arizona. These winds are blocked from the San Joaquin Valley by a 12,000 foot wall called the Sierra Nevada so no real impact is expected in our weather other than to lower dew points a few degrees.
For the next seven days, expect more of the same. Areas of fog nights and mornings with hazy afternoon sunshine. Occasional high clouds will be caught up in the northeast flow aloft but will have no affect on temperatures.
Medium range models are definitely showing a trend towards a change in the overall global pattern. It has parked high pressure along the west coast for almost all of January. Models are tilting towards the high breaking down over the Pacific Northwest and northern California, possibly allowing active weather to move in during the first week of February.
Forecast: Outside of areas of night and morning fog and low clouds and occasional high clouds, it will be mostly clear and hazy through next Saturday.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 6 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Tuesday.
Rain: Expect dry weather for at least the next 7 days. Models the past two days have been trending toward a breakdown of the high during early February, possibly allowing active weather to return to central California. The timing and strength are yet to be determined
Frost: As expected, dew points have dropped a bit over the past few hours and are generally running in the low to mid 40s. this subtle change should be enough for the traditional cold spots to drop to near freezing. A few flatland locations will even tease with the 32 degree mark. No serious frost of freeze situation is seen short or longer term, but we will post a few numbers below to keep you up to date.
