Forecast

February 3, 2022/report

February 3, 2022

A very dry weather pattern will continue for at least the next week and more than likely beyond. uapper level high pressure is centered roughly 500 miles to the west of San Francisco. That puts California on the eastern periphery of the high. This is generating a very dry northeast flow aloft. The flow  at the surface is also off shore. The current altimeter reading at Boise, Idaho is 30.39 inches of mercury while LAX is reporting 30.15. the freezing level above Oakland this morning is 3,900 feet. The high off shore will build inland through the weekend. most locations will move back into the low 60s this afternoon. By Sunday, afternoon highs will be pushing 70 and lower 70s can be anticipated Monday through Wednesday of next week as the  high moves overhead. Medium range models show little change in the overall pattern with a strong high over the western states and a cold trough over the interior west.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Sunday. Mostly clear skies will continue Sunday night through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook:  February 8 through February 14: this time around, this model is reverting back to the same old thing. A large ridge of upper level high pressure will cover the eastern Pacific and the western one-third of the US, meaning the chance of rain will be very low with above average temperatures.

February:  The guidance on this model does not show any particular pattern that would favor temperatures or precipitation. Basically, what it’s saying is there’s equal chances of above or below average rain as well as above or below average temperatures. Flip a coin.

February, March, April: There are no dominant trends on this model favoring above or below average precipitation. Temperatures during this period should be fairly close to seasonal values.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 7 MPH through Sunday with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost: Low to mid 30s were widespread throughout the growing area last night with a spattering of upper 20s. Lindsay and Navelencia were the coldest I could find at 27 as of 6:00am. Exeter dropped to 28.  With a very dry air mass now in place on the valley floor, strong radiational cooling will again be the order of the day…or night. Coldest unprotected low spots will drop into the upper 20s with most fairly flat terrain chilling down into the 29 to 32 degree range. Hillsides will be above freezing. Temperatures at 34 feet will generally range from 5 to 8 degrees warmer at most locations. Expect very slow moderation as we move through the weekend. By Sunday, afternoon highs will be pushing 70. This will slowly begin to pull overnight lows into the 30s at all locations.  Even so, with afternoon dew points running in the 30s, radiational cooling will be strong enough for coldest locations  to still run in the low 30s well into next week. As far as our longer term forecast is concerned, I don’t see anything out there that would give us a problem. Cold air masses will continue to dive into the Rockies and points eastward, leaving California unscathed.
