Forecast

February 4, 2022/report

February 4, 2022

Upper level high pressure continues to be centered roughly 500 miles off the north/central California coast. Waves of low pressure continue to move over the top of the high, through the Pacific Northwest then into the eastern Great Basin. The flow aloft remains out of the north/northwest with a weak off shore surface flow. This pattern will result in a slow warming trend over the weekend and into next week. Temperatures will move into the mid to upper 60s Sunday and upper 60s  to lower 70s Monday through Wednesday as the  high will be virtually right overhead. There is still nothing on medium range models that would result in precipitation for California. Just variations on the blocking ridge pattern which has been so dominant in recent years,

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Monday. Mostly clear skies will continue Monday night through Friday.

Two Week Outlook:  February 11 through February 17: this time around, this model is reverting back to the same old thing. A large ridge of upper level high pressure will cover the eastern Pacific and the western one-third of the US, meaning the chance of rain will be very low with above average temperatures.

February:  The guidance on this model does not show any particular pattern that would favor temperatures or precipitation. Basically, what it’s saying is there’s equal chances of above or below average rain as well as above or below average temperatures. Flip a coin.

February, March, April: There are no dominant trends on this model favoring above or below average precipitation. Temperatures during this period should be fairly close to seasonal values.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 7 MPH through Monday with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost: Most locations chilled into the low to mid 30s last night. The cold spots, as of 6:00am were Sanger, Fowler, Lindsay, and Porterville,, all with readings of 28. Upper level high pressure will slowly shift overhead during the next several days, resulting in warmer daytime highs. This will slowly pull up those overnight temps as well. Still, with midafternoon  dew points in the low to mid 30s, widespread low to mid 30s will continue  with coldest frost pockets briefly dipping into the upper 20s. by Monday of next week, only the coldest low lying locations will drop to the 32 degree mark. Nothing on medium range models suggesting a particularly cold pattern on the horizon.
