February 6, 2022/report

February 6, 2022

Visibilities are not bad on the valley floor this morning. Porterville, Visalia, and Madera were each reporting 10 mile visibility or better. Only Bakersfield was reporting a visibility down to 7 miles at Meadows Field. Outside of some high clouds over northern California, the Golden State is cloud free. Even the usual low clouds along the coastline are  at a minimum this morning. The freezing level aloft over Oakland had risen to 11,000 feet. If it sounds like I’m grasping at things to talk about, I am. The same old pattern shows up both on short and medium range models. A blocking ridge of upper level high pressure covers the eastern Pacific Ocean. Most models show the center of circulation moving to off the coast of the Pacific Northwest next week. The counterclockwise circulation around the high will generate a northeasterly flow over central California, creating downslope heating off the Sierra Nevada, meaning temperatures will top the 70 degree mark on the valley floor. Expect well above average temperatures during the day next week with marginally below average temperatures at night.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Wednesday. Mostly clear skies will continue Wednesday night through Sunday.

Two Week Outlook:  February 13 through February 18: this time around, this model is reverting back to the same old thing. A large ridge of upper level high pressure will cover the eastern Pacific and the western one-third of the US, meaning the chance of rain will be very low with above average temperatures.

February:  The guidance on this model does not show any particular pattern that would favor temperatures or precipitation. Basically, what it’s saying is there’s equal chances of above or below average rain as well as above or below average temperatures. Flip a coin.

February, March, April: There are no dominant trends on this model favoring above or below average precipitation. Temperatures during this period should be fairly close to seasonal values.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 7 MPH through Wednesday with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost: Most locations chilled into the low to mid 30s last night. There were some exceptions, however. Sanger dropped to 28, McFarland 27, and Reedley 29. Temperatures this afternoon will push into the upper 60s.  Overnight lows will slowly drag up as a result. Even so, the valley floor is very dry due to lack of rain and afternoon dew points remain very low. This will allow strong radiational cooling with widespread low to mid 30s and river bottom type of locations briefly dipping into the upper 20s. temperatures in the 30s will be commonplace for the foreseeable future, despite highs topping the 70 degree mark next week. Most locations will come in at or below freezing with coldest locations down to 29 to 32 degrees. I don’t see any change in this overall temperature regime until we have a pattern change. Currently, that change just doesn’t show up on models.
