February 7, 2022/afternoon reports

February 7, 2022

The noon observations certainly reflect the warming trend discussed this morning. Bakersfield had already reached 65, Lemoore 66, and Porterville 67. Various locations topping 70 will be realized this afternoon. Strong upper level high pressure is just west of San Francisco and will move right overhead during the next 72 hours or so. Low to mid 70s can be expected through Wednesday. Interesting that the high will actually strengthen over the weekend and center to the west of the California/Oregon border. Not only will this result in warm, descending air, it also results in an off shore flow both at the surface and aloft. Models are showing readings pushing 80 degrees which would certainly be near record territory this weekend. There does not seem to be any end in sight to this blocking ridge pattern as models going out through the 15th, and some beyond that, are indicating a persistent ridge of upper level high pressure will be along the west coast, creating an off shore flow and much above average temperatures.

Forecast: Mostly clear and hazy through Friday. Mostly clear and continued hazy Saturday through Monday.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 7 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Thursday.

Rain:  Expect dry weather for at least the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost: The noon observations show warmest temperatures are already pushing 70. Readings in the lower 70s  will be realized this afternoon and over the next few afternoons. Interestingly enough, dew points have also risen, they’re in the low to mid 40s. this means fewer locations will dip below freezing tonight. Essentially the same thing can be said for Wednesday through Friday mornings. Models going out through this weekend are even more interesting as they indicate the high will actually strengthen, driving maximum temperatures into the mid to upper 70s. With highs this warm, lows will not reach the freezing mark. The only thing that worries me is that quite often when there’s extreme weather, extreme weather on the flip side can occur. There’s nothing on models suggesting a frost situation, so we’ll just ignore that possibility for now.
