Even though temperatures will rise into the lower 70s this afternoon, overnight lows will still chill to the freezing mark in the very coldest locations. We have a semi-desert climate out there due to lack of rain over the past six weeks. In desert regions, it’s common to have 40 to 50 degree differences between daytime highs and overnight lows. This, of course, is being brought on by a strong and persistent upper level high pressure ridge which, again this morning, is centered just to the west of the Golden Gate. Models show the high’s axis moving northward, centering off the coast of the Pacific Northwest Thursday and Friday. The flow around the high will generate a northeast flow above central California, creating downslope heating. Over the weekend, the high will drift south again, centering right over central California, driving temperatures to near record levels. Warmest locations Saturday and Sunday will push the 80 degree mark. On Monday and Tuesday, a low center over the Pacific Northwest is projected by some models to drop into California, resulting in a cooling trend and possibly even a chance of showers over the high Sierra. Medium range models going out through February 20 show a massive ridge over and off the west coast for dry weather and above average temperatures.
Forecast: Mostly clear and hazy through Saturday. Mostly clear and continued hazy Sunday through Monday.

Two Week Outlook: February 15 through February 21: This model continues to show a blocking ridge pattern along the west coast. Potential Pacific storms are driven far to the north into Alaska then diving southward into the middle of the country. This will mean above average temperatures will continue with little chance of rain.
February: The guidance on this model does not show any particular pattern that would favor temperatures or precipitation. Basically, what it’s saying is there’s equal chances of above or below average rain as well as above or below average temperatures. Flip a coin.
February, March, April: There are no dominant trends on this model favoring above or below average precipitation. Temperatures during this period should be fairly close to seasonal values.
Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 7 MPH through Friday with periods of near calm conditions.
Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
Frost: Even though daytime highs will be warming into the low to mid 70s through Friday, coldest locations will still drop to near the freezing point overnight. Over the weekend, models show the axis of the high just about right overhead, driving highs into the mid to upper 70s with the warmest locations near 80. All locations this weekend and beyond will finally be above 32.
