February 8, 2022/afternoon report

February 8, 2022

Nothing but wall to wall sunshine this afternoon. Midday temperatures are running parallel to yesterday’s readings, meaning just about all locations will end up in the low to mid 70s this afternoon. If you’re an almond tree, you gotta be liking this stuff. The flow at all layers of the atmosphere is out of the northeast. At the surface, the altimeter reading at Boise, Idaho is 30.65 inches of mercury, which is extremely high. A reading of 30.18 was taken at LAX. This off shore flow will send temperatures through the roof in the coastal and intermediate valleys of southern California where readings in some cases will top out in the 90s. In fact, excessive heat warnings are out for the above mentioned regions for Wednesday through Friday. As the high off shore drifts almost overhead during the weekend, daytime highs will tease with record territories at many locations. The high will finally begin to weaken Monday as a weak upper air disturbance moves through it. There’s even a chance of light showers over the high country during the middle of next week,, but nothing for the valley floor.

Forecast: Mostly clear and hazy through Friday. Mostly clear and continued hazy Saturday through Tuesday.

Short Term:

Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 7 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Friday.

Rain:  Expect dry weather for at least the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost: Temperatures are just about where they were yesterday at this time and will top out in the low to mid 70s. Only the very coldest, dry, river bottom type of location will drop to near freezing tonight and again Thursday morning.  As very strong upper level high pressure moves overhead Friday through Sunday, all locations will be above freezing. A weak upper air disturbance will weaken the high a bit Monday through Wednesday of next week. However, temperatures will still range a good 10 degrees above average.
