This will be the last day of unusually warm weather for central California as warmest locations will again top the 80 degree mark this afternoon, especially over the Kern County portion of the valley. Already this morning, the high is beginning to break down over the Pacific Northwest in response to a rather compact low moving out of the Gulf of Alaska. This morning’s models give little hope of any rain on the valley floor Tuesday. What little dynamics this system has will move mainly into Nevada. The high Sierra will observe light snow showers Tuesday along with cooer and breezy weather on the valley floor. It’s hard to believe we’ll be going from yesterday’s mid-80s in Bakersfield to local frost on the ground Wednesday morning. The low itself will move into the Desert Southwest by Wednesday morning, ending any chance of rain for the remainder of next week and more than likely beyond. Medium range models show a large high right along the Pacific coast Wednesday through Sunday of next week. However, longer range models indicate a cold trough of low pressure along jthe west coast beginning the 20th with possibly a prolonged period of below average temperatures. This makes sense as weather equalizes itself.
Forecast: Mostly clear through Monday. Partly cloudy Monday night and Tuesday with a slight chance of showers Tuesday, mainly near the Sierra Nevada foothills. Turning breezy and much cooler Tuesday. Partly cloudy Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Mostly clear Wednesday afternoon through Sunday.

Two Week Outlook: February 18 through February 24 This model looks completely different than in the recent past. A cold trough of low pressure will be along the west coast for below average temperatures and at least a chance at unsettled weather.
February: The guidance on this model does not show any particular pattern that would favor temperatures or precipitation. Basically, what it’s saying is there’s equal chances of above or below average rain as well as above or below average temperatures. Flip a coin.
February, March, April: There are no dominant trends on this model favoring above or below average precipitation. Temperatures during this period should be fairly close to seasonal values.
Wind Discussion: Winds will be at or less than 6 MPH through Monday morning. Winds will be out of the southeast Monday afternoon at 5 to 12 MPH. winds Monday night and Tuesday will be out of the west to northwest at 10 to 20 MPH with gusts to 30 MPH possible, mainly along the west side but locally elsewhere. Winds will decrease later Tuesday night with light winds returning Wednesday and Thursday.
Rain: The chance of measurable rain Tuesday is very low. Greatest risk will be along the Sierra Nevada foothills. The chance for measurable rain at any given location is no more than 10 to 20 percent. expect dry weather Tuesday night and for the remainder of next week.
Frost: All locations will be above 32 degrees through Tuesday morning. The mostly dry storm moving through central California Tuesday will have a cold pool of air associated with it which will settle to the valley floor. The potential of this air mass will be widespread low to mid 30s Wednesday morning through Friday morning. Upper 20s will be possible, mainly in dry low spots. Moderation will begin to take place next weekend as upper level high pressure builds overhead.
