Forecast

March 7, 2022/report

March 7, 2022

Midday temperatures are running 3 to 5 degrees higher than 24 hours ago. Satellite imagery shows a batch of high clouds moving rapidly southward through central California in association with a trough of low  pressure moving through the interior west. Otherwise, mostly clear skies prevail. We continue to be in a sandwich between upper level high pressure and a trough of low pressure. All this is creating a northerly flow aloft. Even though daytime temperatures will incrementally creep up the next few days, the air mass is dry enough to allow overnight lows to fall well down into the 30s at most locations north of Kern County. Yet another inside slider will dive southward Wednesday night and Thursday into the interior west. California will be just west of the active portion of this storm, although snow showers are possible over the high Sierra Wednesday night and Thursday. Most models show the high beginning to move overhead Friday and Saturday, pushing temperatures into the low to mid 70s. beginning late Sunday and Monday, a strong westerly flow will set up across the eastern Pacific, sending a series of storms into the Pacific Northwest with showers affecting roughly the northern one-quarter of California from time to time. Central California will remain south of active weather and, with a westerly flow prevailing, temperatures will generally be above average next week.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Thursday night. Mostly clear Thursday night through Monday.

Wind Discussion: Winds this evening will be out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH, diminishing by midnight. Winds later tonight through Thursday will be generally at or less than 8 mph with periods of near calm conditions, mainly during the night and early morning hours.

Rain:  Models continue to change in trying to nail down a pattern for next week. Beginning Monday, a series of storms will soak the Pacific Northwest. Models show a series of storms running from west to east across Washington and Oregon and affecting the northern ¼ of California from time to time. For now, we’ll go with a dry forecast while watching for any future changes.

Frost: Dew points are huddled in the mid 30s this afternoon while air temperatures are warmer on average than 24 hours ago. The air mass at the surface is dry enough for strong radiational cooling to continue with widespread low to mid 30s expected tonight. Coldest frost pockets will chill into the 29 to 30 degree range. Again, most other locations will cool down to 31 to 37 degrees. Expect temperatures to modify Wednesday morning by another 2 to 5 degrees. For the remainder of the week and into next week, expect above freezing temperatures.
