Significant differences in pressure between high pressure off the northern California coast and a trough of low pressure in the desert southwest is generating some gusty winds along the west side of the valley. Winds at Hanford, for example, were sustained at 13 mph, gusting to 23 while a bit further west, winds were sustained at 29 mph, gusting to 36 at Lemoore. This has lowered dew points along the west side and will allow drier air to seep into the valley later this evening, leading to local frost Friday morning. Upper level high pressure will rapidly build in from the west, leading to a warming trend beginning Friday. Most locations Saturday and Sunday will move into the mid 70s. beginning Sunday night and Monday, a zonal flow will develop across the eastern Pacific and into the Pacific Northwest and northern California. Waves of low pressure will move inland through Washington and Oregon with the southern flank of these systems clipping northern California. the first of these will arrive late Sunday night and Monday with the second around midweek. Central California will remain south of the zone of active weather with above average temperatures, mainly due to high pressure and a westerly flow aloft. Even the two week model is indicating there’s a low chance of precipitation with above average temperatures through the 24th.
Forecast: Mostly clear skies today and tonight. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Friday and Friday night. Mostly clear Saturday through Sunday morning. Mostly clear to partly cloudy Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning. Variable cloudiness at times Monday through Thursday..

Wind Discussion: Winds through the evening hours and along the west side from Merced southward to Kings County will be out of the northwest at 15 to 25 mph with locally stronger gusts. Elsewhere, winds will be out of the northwest at 5 to 12 mph with stronger gusts. By midnight, winds will be light and variable to near calm. Winds Friday through Sunday will be generally at or less than 12 mph with periods of near calm conditions. Winds during the afternoons will be mainly out of the northwest.
Rain: Expect dry conditions over the next 5 to 10 days.
Frost: Strong gusty winds are moving down the west side of the valley this afternoon. As a result, dew points range from the mid to upper 20s along the west side to near 40 in southeastern Tulare County. Dew points will continue to lower this afternoon and evening, allowing colder locations to dip into the low to mid 30s. This will pretty much be a one night stand as strong upper level high pressure will quickly move overhead, warming temperatures well into the 70s over the weekend.
For tonight, the coldest riverbed type locations could briefly fall to 30 or so. Most locations will range between 31 to 37. Expect 2 to 3 degrees of moderation Saturday morning with above freezing temperatures all of next week.
