March 29, 2022

Yesterday’s soaker resulted in significant amounts of precipitation throughout the valley, ranging from roughly .33 with isolated locations picking up more than an inch. The center of circulation this morning is over western Arizona and is accelerating eastward. The northwesterly flow behind the low is generating the usual upslope clouds against the north facing slopes of the Tehachapi Mountains, which will take several more hours to burn off as drier air finally mixes out the cloud deck for a mostly sunny afternoon.

The weather pattern for the remainder of the week will be rather mundane through Friday. We will find ourselves under a flat zone of upper level  high pressure with a relatively cool northwesterly flow aloft. Temperatures through Friday will nudge up into the lower 70s, which is close to seasonal although this afternoon, locations in Kern County will only warm into the mid 60s due to persistent upslope clouds. Over the weekend, the high will strengthen and build further north, allowing readings to warm to near 80 degrees Sunday and Monday. temperatures will fall back to the low to mid 70s Tuesday as a trough of low pressure moves through the Pacific Northwest.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Friday with the exception of Kern County and eastern Tulare County which will remain mostly cloudy into the afternoon hours. Mostly clear Friday night through Tuesday.

Two Week Outlook:  April 4 through April 10: This model indicates a dome of high pressure will be right along the Pacific coast, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures. The chance of precipitation during this period will be very low.

April:  April is a transition month as we move from springtime weather to early summer weather at the end of the month. This model indicates above average temperatures over the southern half of the Golden State with near average temperatures over northern and central California. Precipitation will range below average.

April, May, June: This model shows above average temperatures over the Desert Southwest, stretching westward to California. With high pressure generally in control, expect below average precipitation…which doesn’t mean much now that we’re headed into the dry season.

Wind Discussion: Winds during the afternoons and evenings will be mainly out of the northwest at around 5 to 12 mph through Friday. Winds during the night and morning hours will be variable and generally at or less than 6 mph with periods of near calm conditions.
