March 30, 2022/report

With the spring season starting so quietly, we’re going to cheat a bit and start one a day forecasts today, two days early. As always, updates will be issued if appropriate and please don’t hesitate to call or email if you have questions.

March 30, 2022

Upslope clouds continue to regenerate against the west facing slopes of the Sierra Nevada and the north facing slopes of the Tehachapi Mountains. The base of the overcast ranges from 3,500 feet at Fresno to 6,000 feet at Visalia and Porterville. A relatively strong northwest flow aloft continues around the eastern rim of upper level high pressure located just off shore. The high will slowly work its way inland over the next few days, resulting in a warming trend. Temperatures today and Thursday will generally climb into the lower 70s, which is about average for this time of year anyway, then will jump into the upper 70s Friday and near 80 over the weekend. There’s really not a whole lot to report. Models show a dry forecast for the next week to possibly ten days. Basically, we had two storms during the month of March, which is actually better than we had in January and February when Pacific storms were largely absent.

Forecast: Partly cloudy today. Becoming mostly clear tonight through Saturday. Mostly clear Saturday night through Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook:  April 5 through April 11: This model indicates a dome of high pressure will be right along the Pacific coast, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures. The chance of precipitation during this period will be very low.

April:  April is a transition month as we move from springtime weather to early summer weather at the end of the month. This model indicates above average temperatures over the southern half of the Golden State with near average temperatures over northern and central California. Precipitation will range below average.

April, May, June: This model shows above average temperatures over the Desert Southwest, stretching westward to California. With high pressure generally in control, expect below average precipitation…which doesn’t mean much now that we’re headed into the dry season.

Wind Discussion: Winds during the afternoons and evenings will be mainly out of the northwest at around 5 to 12 mph through Saturday. Winds during the night and morning hours will be variable and generally at or less than 6 mph with periods of near calm conditions.
