April 2, 2022/report

April 2, 2022

Temperatures are 1 to 3 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. Above the valley floor, Sandberg at 4,100 feet is 6 degrees warmer while the freezing level this morning over Oakland, according to the latest balloon sounding, is at 11,400 feet. A temporary warming trend is underway. Most locations both today and tomorrow will top out in the lower 80s, backing off a few degrees Monday as the high weakens in response to a weak weather system moving through the Pacific Northwest. We will also see an increasing amount of higher level clouds tonight and Sunday as a weak disturbance off of Baja moves inland to our south. At midweek, a strong high over the eastern Pacific will build inland for a major warming trend. By Thursday afternoon, warmest locations on the valley floor will top the 90 degree mark while on Friday and Saturday, readings will soar into the low to mid 90s, which is more reminiscent of the first week in June. Temperatures will slowly back off a weak from Sunday as the northern portion of the trough begins to break down. Medium range models after the 9th are indicating a trough of low pressure will dig southward from the Gulf of Alaska with temperatures tumbling to below average and even a chance of rain.

Forecast: A mix of high clouds and sunshine today. Variable high clouds tonight through Sunday. Mostly clear Sunday night through Saturday.

Two Week Outlook:  April 9 through April 15: We now see indications of a trough of low pressure digging southward from the Gulf of Alaska and into the western US. Temperatures will fall below average with an increasing possibility of showers.

April:  April is a transition month as we move from springtime weather to early summer weather at the end of the month. This model indicates above average temperatures over the southern half of the Golden State with near average temperatures over northern and central California. Precipitation will range below average.

April, May, June: This model shows above average temperatures over the Desert Southwest, stretching westward to California. With high pressure generally in control, expect below average precipitation…which doesn’t mean much now that we’re headed into the dry season.

Wind Discussion: Winds this morning will be light and variable, becoming northwesterly this afternoon at around 5 to 12 mph. Winds tonight will be light with periods of near calm conditions. Winds Sunday through Monday will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with stronger gusts along the Interstate 5 corridor. Winds Tuesday will be light and variable.

Rain:  Expect dry weather through at least the next week to ten days.

Frost:  Expect above freezing temperatures indefinitely.
