Forecast

April 9, 2022/report

April 9, 2022

A dry trough of low pressure is currently moving through the Great Basin. Surface pressure is falling over Nevada and Arizona and is rising along the northern California coast. The current altimeter reading at San Francisco is an even 30.00 inches of mercury while at Las Vegas, the reading has fallen to 29.77. this pressure gradient, as we call it, will generate gusty winds down the valley, especially along the west side. Currently, winds at Hanford are gusting to 26 mph and are sustained at 16 mph at Fresno and Lemoore. Temperatures will plummet beginning today as readings fall from the mid 90s yesterday to the low to mid 80s today, the low to mid 70s Saturday, and just the mid to upper 60s Saturday. A stronger low will develop off the Washington  coast Monday with the bottom segment of the low moving into northern and central California Monday night and Tuesday. Showers will spread down the Sierra Nevada Monday with a cold frontal passage Monday night. This front may have enough energy to spawn some light showers down the valley Monday night and Tuesday morning. Locations that do receive measurable rain will record no more than .10. Local frost will be possible Tuesday through Thursday mornings, which is discussed below. Another cold low will drop into California Thursday and Friday of next week for another  chance of light showers.

Forecast: Mostly clear today. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy tonight through Sunday. Partly cloudy Sunday night. A slight chance of showers Monday afternoon and evening then a chance of light showers Monday night and Tuesday morning. Partly cloudy Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday night. Variable cloudiness Thursday through Friday with a slight chance of showers. Partly cloudy Friday night through Saturday.

Two Week Outlook:  April 15 through April 21: This model indicates temperatures will rise to at least marginally above average during this period. It also indicates that there will be a semi blocking ridge pattern in place, meaning the chance of precipitation is very low.

April:  April is a transition month as we move from springtime weather to early summer weather at the end of the month. This model indicates above average temperatures over the southern half of the Golden State with near average temperatures over northern and central California. Precipitation will range below average.

April, May, June: This model shows above average temperatures over the Desert Southwest, stretching westward to California. With high pressure generally in control, expect below average precipitation…which doesn’t mean much now that we’re headed into the dry season.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 15 to 25 mph along the western side of Merced, Fresno, and Kings Counties with gusts to 35 mph possible. In eastern Fresno County and most of Tulare and Kern Counties, winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with stronger gusts through Tuesday.

Rain:  showers will spread down the Sierra Nevada Monday as a cold through of low pressure approaches. Light showers will be possible over the valley floor Monday night and Tuesday morning as the associated cold front moves through. Rainfall amounts will range from noting to upwards of .10 along the east side from Porterville north. Dry weather will return Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday night. There will be  second chance of light showers Thursday and Friday of next week as a second trough of low pressure pushes through.

Frost:  Blended model information this morning shows a reasonable amount of spotty frost Tuesday through Thursday mornings of next week. using Porterville as my key station, this model shows a low of 36 Tuesday, 34 Wednesday, and 37 Thursday. Under appropriate conditions, this would put low lying regions down to 29 to 30 degrees for short durations. Since we have a pretty good trend going, my confidence level is reasonably high that spotty frost will occur. For now, I don’t anticipate freeze conditions, but we’ll watch this for you.
