Light showers have spread down the Sierra Nevada as far south as northern Tulare County. Doppler radar is picking up on a few light showers at this hour over western Fresno County. These showers are along a cold front moving into the south valley at this hour. The parent low is centered over Idaho both at the surface and aloft. This is setting up large differences in pressure between the coast and the interior. For example, the altimeter at San Francisco is currently 29.94 inches of mercury while inland at Salt Lake City the pressure is all the way down to 29.32. The result is strong winds over the high Sierra and over the mountains and deserts of southern California.
This system is still largely dry with only light scattered showers as the front moves southward this evening. Dry weather will return Tuesday through Friday under a westerly flow aloft. The next chance of showers will arrive during the first half of the weekend as another low rapidly moves through northern and central California.
A chilly pool of air is now settling in over central California. This air mass is cold enough for local frost, but only under ideal conditions. For tonight, there’s plenty of wind energy above the valley floor which should keep matters mixed up, allowing temperatures at most locations to fall into the mid to upper 30s. it’s possible those pesky river bottom and similar locations could chill into the lower 30s for short durations, but most locations will remain above freezing.
Dew points as of 1:00pm were in the mid to upper 30s in the south valley, but have actually risen from Fresno County north into the low to mid 40s. The best chance of temperatures reaching the freezing mark will be Wednesday morning when the atmosphere settles down, allowing a better chance of radiational cooling. At any rate, this is nothing unusual for this time of year and a hard freeze is not anticipated.
Temperatures will modify after Wednesday morning as a westerly flow in the upper atmosphere begins to benefit our temperatures.
Forecast: A chance of light showers through the evening hours tonight, otherwise partly to mostly cloudy. Partly cloudy Tuesday. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Tuesday night through Friday morning. Increasing cloudiness late Friday and Friday night with a chance of light showers after midnight Friday through Saturday. A slight chance of showers Saturday night. Becoming partly cloudy Sunday. Mostly clear Sunday night and Monday.
