All the energy from yesterday’s weather system has moved into the interior west. We are now under a cold, northwest flow wrapping around the main area of low pressure which this morning is centered over northern Wyoming. The freezing level has dropped all the way down to 4,400 feet. Yesterday at this time, the freezing level was 9, 300 feet. Even though there will be abundant sunshine today, it will be chilly. Gusty winds can be expected along the west side due to significant differences in pressure between off shore northern California and the interior west. The current altimeter reading at San Francisco is 30.18 inches of mercury while at LAV, the reading is 29.80. The flow pattern the next couple of days will become westerly, slowly bringing temperatures up. After a chilly night tonight however, as blended model information indicates, a chance for local frost, but no freeze, is expected. The westerly, or zonal flow, will buckle Friday night and Saturday, allowing a trough of low pressure to move through. On paper, this system looks quite weak, buy there may be enough dynamics for a chance of light showers. This system will be followed by a stronger high which will drive temperatures into the 80s next Tuesday and Wednesday.
Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Thursday night. Increasing cloudiness Friday. A small chance of light showers Friday night and Saturday, mainly from Fresno county north. Partly cloudy Friday night and Saturday. Mostly clear Sunday night through Tuesday.

Two Week Outlook: April 19 through April 25: This model indicates temperatures will rise to at least marginally above average during this period. It also indicates that there will be a semi blocking ridge pattern in place, meaning the chance of precipitation is very low.
April: April is a transition month as we move from springtime weather to early summer weather at the end of the month. This model indicates above average temperatures over the southern half of the Golden State with near average temperatures over northern and central California. Precipitation will range below average.
April, May, June: This model shows above average temperatures over the Desert Southwest, stretching westward to California. With high pressure generally in control, expect below average precipitation…which doesn’t mean much now that we’re headed into the dry season.
Wind Discussion: Expect winds to be mainly out of the northwest today at 10 to 20 mph at times. Gusts as high as 35 mph will be possible, mainly along the west side but locally elsewhere. Winds will begin to die off this evening and become light to near calm after midnight. Winds Wednesday through Friday will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 mph. Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally variable to no more than 7 mph with periods of near calm conditions.
Rain: Expect dry conditions through Thursday night. A weak trough of low pressure will move through Friday night and Saturday morning. This system appears weaker as the main dynamics will move through northern California. Nevertheless, we’ll keep a small chance of light showers in the forecast mainly from Fresno County north. Dry weather will quickly return Friday night through at least Tuesday, although there is the possibility of a stronger trough of low pressure about a week from Thursday.
Frost: The balloon sounding above Oakland this morning pegged the freezing level there at 4,400 feet. So, even though yesterday’s weak weather system has moved on, the air mass in its wake is quite cold, but it’s’ nothing unusual for mid April. Lows tonight will generally fall into the mid to upper 30s. the blended model information this morning is indicating the coldest river bottom and similar frost pockets will dip into the lower 30s. it’s possible isolated river bottom pockets could drop down to 29 or 30 for short durations, but most locations will bottom out in the 30s tonight. All locations will be above freezing Thursday morning and beyond. For now, there’s nothing indicating a particularly cold pattern ahead.
