A dry trough of low pressure is currently moving through California. Surface pressures are falling ahead of the trough over the Great Basin and are rising off shore. This will cause winds to crank up over the Kern County mountains and deserts. Even on the valley floor, the difference in pressure between San Francisco and Las Vegas is fairly significant. The current altimeter reading at San Francisco is 30.03 inches of mercury while at Las Vegas the barometer reads 29.71. Winds will be out of the northwest at 10 to 20 mph or so along with a minor cooling trend. Temperatures will begin to rise again Saturday as a ridge of upper level high pressure moves in from the west and builds a ridge into the Pacific Northwest. Temperatures will be marginally above average for much of next week, possibly approaching the 90 degree mark by Wednesday or Thursday as the high reaches its pinnacle, only to fall back again as a trough moves in from the west about Friday of next week. this time of year, trough passages are typically dry and that will certainly be the case this time around.
Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Sunday with occasional high clouds. Mostly clear Sunday night through Thursday with occasional high clouds mixed in.

Two Week Outlook: May 5 through May 11: This model is showing a trough of low pressure along the coast during this period with temperatures close to seasonal average. Above average precipitation will occur over northern California with only a minimal chance of light showers as far south as Fresno County.
May: This model shows a dominant high stretching from Texas to southern California, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures for the month. It also gives an equal chance of above or below normal precipitation.
May, June, July: This model shows an early season high over the Four Corners region of the desert southwest, stretching westward to California, causing temperatures as we head into summer to be marginally above average. Since this is the dry season, the chances of precipitation will be very low
Wind Discussion: Winds will be mainly out of the west to northwest, increasing to 10 to 20 mph today, peaking this afternoon and evening with stronger gusts. Winds will die off late tonight, becoming light and variable. Winds Friday through Sunday will be generally out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at around 5 to 12 mph with locally stronger gusts. Winds during the night and morning hours will be light and variable with periods of near calm conditions.
Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next week to possibly ten days.
