Forecast

April 29, 2022/report

April 29, 2022

A weak trough of low pressure which moved through yesterday has shifted into the Rocky Mountain region. This now puts us under a weak upper high with a westerly flow aloft. Temperatures will warm accordingly over the next 48 hours. Temperatures will move into the low to mid 80s Saturday and Sunday. A zone of upper level high pressure will remain as a weak storm track moves over the top and into the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia. This will keep temperatures near seasonal values through Tuesday. During the latter part of next week, a stronger high will build into the west coast, driving temperatures to near 90 next Thursday and Friday. Typically during early May, these upward spikes in temperatures are short lived and that will be the cast this time, as well. Models show a stronger low moving into the western US next weekend with showers possible for northern California. We’ll have to see if a trend develops before we mention a chance of rain for the valley. At the very least, a significant cooling trend will begin next Saturday and Sunday along with increasing amounts of cloud cover. In the meantime, the marine layer remains shallow enough to not be able to squeeze through the Delta and down into the valley. The air aloft remains warm with a freezing level of 12,300 feet.

Forecast: Other than occasional high clouds, skies will be mostly clear through Tuesday. Mostly clear Tuesday night through Friday.

Two Week Outlook:  May 5 through May 11: This model is showing a trough of low pressure along the coast during this period with temperatures close to seasonal average. Above average precipitation will occur over northern California with only a minimal chance of light showers as far south as Fresno County.

May:  This model shows a dominant high stretching from Texas to southern California, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures for the month. It also gives an equal chance of above or below normal precipitation.

May, June, July: This model shows an early season high over the Four Corners region of the desert southwest, stretching westward to California, causing temperatures as we head into summer to be marginally above average. Since this is the dry season, the chances of precipitation will be very low

Wind Discussion: during the afternoons and evenings through Monday, winds will generally be out of the northwest at 5 to 15 mph with locally stronger gusts. Winds during the nights and mornings will be generally variable to 8 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for the next week to possibly ten days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
