Forecast

May 3, 2022/report

May 3, 2022

Currently, a ridge of upper level high pressure is building eastward over California with a ridge extending inland into Washington and Oregon. The low is now located over eastern Utah. A strong ridge of upper level high pressure will build over the west coast over the next 48 hours, pushing temperatures into the low to mid 90s Wednesday and Thursday. The progressive pattern of late will continue as a trough of low pressure builds into the Pacific Northwest late Thursday and Friday. This will break down the top portion of the high, creating a zonal flow into the Pacific Northwest with a flat ridge of upper level high pressure over California through the weekend. By early next week, a trough of low pressure will dig southward into northern California for a chance of showers Sunday and Monday over northwest California and the Mount Shasta/Siskiyou region. Conditions over central and southern California will remain dry. A big trough will carve itself out over the western US beginning late Monday and Tuesday as a sharp ridge builds off shore and juts into Alaska. This will generate a northerly flow over California, resulting in below average temperatures Monday through Wednesday of next week.

Forecast: Other than occasional high clouds, skies will be mostly clear through Friday. Mostly clear Friday night through Tuesday.

Two Week Outlook:  May 10 through May 16: This model is showing a trough of low pressure along the coast during this period with temperatures close to seasonal average. Above average precipitation will occur over northern California with only a minimal chance of light showers as far south as Fresno County.

May:  This model shows a dominant high stretching from Texas to southern California, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures for the month. It also gives an equal chance of above or below normal precipitation.

May, June, July: This model shows an early season high over the Four Corners region of the desert southwest, stretching westward to California, causing temperatures as we head into summer to be marginally above average. Since this is the dry season, the chances of precipitation will be very low

Wind Discussion: winds will be mainly out of the west to northwest at 8 to 15 mph with gusts to 30 mph possible this afternoon along the west side of Fresno and Kings Counties and locally elsewhere. winds Wednesday and Thursday will continue out of the west at mainly 8 to 15 mph with stronger gusts. Winds Thursday night and Friday will be generally less than 12 mph. Winds Friday night and Saturday will again increase out of the northwest at 10 to 20 mph with stronger gusts.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for the next week to possibly ten days.
