At the upper levels of the atmosphere, a zone of flat high pressure covers the eastern Pacific Ocean and California. There is a weak ripple of low pressure moving through the high which should maintain temperatures in the mid to upper 80s today. Modified marine air is pushing through Pacheco Pass as winds there are sustained out of the west at 24 mph, gusting to 35. Surface pressure is lower over Nevada than off shore. The current altimeter reading at San Francisco is 30.03 inches of mercury while at Las Vegas the reading is 29.74. The high will strengthen Wednesday and Thursday, moving temperatures into the low to mid 90s then will back off again a bit, allowing readings in the upper 80s Saturday. A stronger high will build further north Sunday through Tuesday, pushing readings into the upper 90s. blended model information does show a chance hotter locations will reach the century mark Monday and Tuesday of next week, although it will be a close call. Temperatures in the lower 100s are not unusual this time of year. The record high for today’s date is 106.

Two Week Outlook: May 23 through May 29: This model is showing a fairly substantial ridge of upper level high pressure over the eastern Pacific and the western US, maintaining above average temperatures for central California with little to no chance of precipitation.
May: This model shows a dominant high stretching from Texas to southern California, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures for the month. It also gives an equal chance of above or below normal precipitation.
May, June, July: This model shows an early season high over the Four Corners region of the desert southwest, stretching westward to California, causing temperatures as we head into summer to be marginally above average. Since this is the dry season, the chances of precipitation will be very low
Wind Discussion: Winds during the afternoon and evening hours will be generally out of the northwest at around 5 to 12 mph. Winds will increase to around 10 to 20 mph at times late Friday through Saturday, decreasing again to around 5 to 12 mph Saturday night and Sunday.
