Upper level high pressure is centered roughly 500 miles off the central coast with the eastern flank of the high over California and the Pacific Northwest. Significant warming is taking place at all levels of the atmosphere. The freezing level over Oakland has risen to just under 16,000 feet. Satellite imagery shows no clouds or fog along the central or northern California coastlines with no sea breeze moving through the Delta. The high will shift inland over the next 36 hours, driving temperatures into the upper 90s today and into the 100 to 105 degree range Wednesday. A trough of low pressure will be approaching the California coast Thursday, rapidly deepening the marine layer. A surge of modified sea breeze will move down the valley, lowering temperatures into double digits from Merced County north with the rest of the valley remaining in triple digits. As the trough moves inland Thursday night and Friday, further cooling will prevail though readings will remain above average. Over the weekend, a stronger trough will move inland, lowering temperatures to near average and perhaps even a bit below by the early part of next week. temperatures for next week will be marginally above average, however triple digits are not anticipated.
Forecast: Clear and hot through Thursday. Mostly clear Thursday night and Friday with a slow cooling trend. Mostly clear and cooler Saturday through Tuesday.
