May 28, 2022

There is a 12 millibar difference in pressure between San Francisco and Las Vegas at this hour. This is resulting in winds out of the northwest at 10 to 20 mph or so from Merced down to Visalia. Stronger gusts are being reported along the far west side as marine air traverses the Coast Range and spills into the valley. A trough of low pressure now extends from western British Columbia southward into northern and central California. There are some showers in far northern California. Otherwise, this event is just being marked by some variable high level clouds. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some upslope clouds develop tonight and Sunday morning as a strong northwesterly flow aloft is lifted by the Kern County mountains. Temperatures, as you might expect, will continue to cool with readings only near 80 degrees or so Sunday with slight warming Monday. from Tuesday through Thursday, upper level high pressure will displace the trough for the next warming trend. Readings will jump into the upper 80s as early as Wednesday. As the high moves inland Thursday through Friday, readings will jump into the 90s only to fall back into the 80s again next weekend as the next trough of low pressure moves through.

Forecast: Partly cloudy through tonight. Mostly clear Sunday with the exception of Kern County which may stay cloudy into midday. Mostly clear and warmer Monday through Friday. Mostly clear Friday night and Saturday.

Two Week Outlook:  June 4 through June 10: This model is showing an active pattern through the Pacific Northwest and occasionally even northern California. Even though showers are not likely in the valley, it’s possible some showers could affect the Sierra Nevada with near average temperatures.

May:  This model shows a dominant high stretching from Texas to southern California, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures for the month. It also gives an equal chance of above or below normal precipitation.

May, June, July: This model shows an early season high over the Four Corners region of the desert southwest, stretching westward to California, causing temperatures as we head into summer to be marginally above average. Since this is the dry season, the chances of precipitation will be very low

We will be out of the office Monday, May 30. Reports will resume Tuesday, May 31. Have a safe holiday weekend.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for at least the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
