Forecast

June 6, 2022/report

June 6, 2022

There is still a fairly steep pressure gradient between the coast and the interior west. The current altimeter reading at San Francisco is at 30.00 inches of mercury while at Las Vegas the reading is at 29.71. As a result, a fairly stiff northwesterly breeze is blowing down the valley. The 6:00am observation indicated winds in the 10 to 20 mph range are evident all the way from Stockton to Visalia. The pressure gradient will weaken as the day wares on with generally light winds tonight through Saturday. A high center is located several hundred miles off the central coast and will expand northward and eastward over the next 72 hours. This will result in incremental heating each day for the remainder of the week. by Friday, high pressure will cover the eastern Pacific, linking up to another upper high over the interior west and setting the stage for hot weather Friday through Sunday. Hottest locations on the valley floor, especially Saturday and Sunday, will be in the 103 to 106 degree range. The high  will be suppressed southward over the Four Corners region Sunday night through Monday as a trough of low pressure moves into the Pacific Northwest. This will allow a shallow intrusion of marine air into the valley Monday and Tuesday of next week, lowering temperatures back into double digits. A west to southwest flow will continue both in the short and medium term for generally clear skies.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies Monday through Thursday. Mostly clear and hot Friday through Sunday. Mostly clear Sunday night and Monday with the beginning of a cooling trend.

Two Week Outlook:  June 13 through June 19: This model is depicting a rather strong ridge of high pressure over the Desert Southwest and the eastern Pacific Ocean. Temperatures will rise to above average with the usual dry weather continuing.

June:  This model shows a high center over New Mexico and Texas extending into California for marginally above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model is hinting at a possible active monsoon season this year once we get into July and August. It’s possible we could see more than the usual amount of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but the valley will be typically dry with above average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: Winds today will be out of the northwest at 10 to 20 mph with stronger gusts possible, mainly along the west side. Winds tonight will be generally out of the northwest at 5 to 12 mph, becoming light and variable after midnight. Winds Tuesday through Thursday will be generally out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 mph. Winds during the night and morning hours will be variable to no more than 10 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for at least the next 7 to 10 days.
