Forecast

June 10, 2022/report

June 10, 2022

A zone of upper level high pressure stretches from one center well off shore to another directly over California to yet a third high center over the Four Corners region. This will result in very hot weather this weekend although a bit of moderation will occur Sunday as a trough of low pressure moves into the Pacific Northwest. The freezing level is all the way up to 16,300 feet which illustrates a bubble of warm subsiding air above California. Satellite imagery shows no fog along the northern and central California coast so any cooling will be along the immediate beaches with very hot weather over the Coast Range and coastal valleys. As that trough of low pressure moves into the Pacific Northwest Sunday, the marine layer will deepen, allowing that modified sea breeze to push into the valley. Readings will drop into the mid to upper 90s Sunday and Monday. the whole trough will move through Tuesday and Wednesday for significant cooling. Tuesday will be the coolest in the series as temperatures in the upper 80s will be widespread. The pattern will remain progressive, however, as a new high will build in from the west Thursday and Friday for another round of triple digit heat. Interestingly enough, an even stronger low will approach the coast Thursday and Friday. This system may be strong enough for showers over portions of northern California with partly cloudy skies and much cooler weather next weekend as a strong high bakes the middle of the nation.

Forecast: Mostly clear and hot through Sunday. Mostly clear and cooler Monday through Wednesday. Mostly clear and cooler Thursday through Friday.

Two Week Outlook:  June 16 through June 22: This model shows a trough of low pressure being more dominant along the west coast, allowing modified marine air to move down the valley from time to time. Near to marginally below average temperatures will be the result along with dry conditions.

June:  This model shows a high center over New Mexico and Texas extending into California for marginally above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model is hinting at a possible active monsoon season this year once we get into July and August. It’s possible we could see more than the usual amount of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but the valley will be typically dry with above average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: Winds through Saturday will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 mph. Winds tonight will be generally light and variable. Winds later Saturday night through Monday will be out of the northwest at 10 to  15 mph with gusts to near 25 mph, mainly along the west side.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for at least the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
