The coming week will be characterized by significant swings in temperatures from day to day. In the short term, much cooler temperatures have already arrived as readings this morning are anywhere from 6 to 12 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. Gusty northwesterly winds are blowing down the valley, generally in the 10 to 20 mph range with gusts as high as 35 mph, mainly along the west side. Strong differences in pressure exist between high pressure off the northern California coast and a deep surface low over southern Nevada. The current altimeter reading at San Francisco is at 29.97 inches of mercury while at Las Vegas, the reading is 29.53. in the upper levels of the atmosphere, a strong northwest flow prevails along the back side of a trough of low pressure moving through the Great Basin. This flow is being lifted by the Kern County mountains and the southern Sierra Nevada and is forming a layer of upslope clouds in the extreme south valley. Temperatures yesterday were near the century mark and today will only rise into the mid 80s. Readings will rapidly recover, however, Tuesday through Thursday as a progressive ridge of high pressure moves in from the west. Readings in the mid to upper 90s will return Wednesday through Friday with hottest locations near the century mark. Over the weekend a deep trough of low pressure will move into the Pacific Northwest and northern California, allowing another strong surge of marine air to move down the valley for significant cooling Saturday through Monday. readings will fall back into the mid to upper 80s. Next week appears to be less chaotic as a flat zone of high pressure sets up over the eastern Pacific and into the western US for marginally above average temperatures.
Forecast: Mostly clear and much cooler today and Tuesday. Mostly clear and warmer Wednesday through Friday. Mostly clear Friday night through Monday and much cooler.

Two Week Outlook: June 20 through June 26: This model shows a trough of low pressure being more dominant along the west coast, allowing modified marine air to move down the valley from time to time. Near to marginally below average temperatures will be the result along with dry conditions.
June: This model shows a high center over New Mexico and Texas extending into California for marginally above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.
June, July, August: This model is hinting at a possible active monsoon season this year once we get into July and August. It’s possible we could see more than the usual amount of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but the valley will be typically dry with above average temperatures.
Wind Discussion: gusty winds out of the northwest will continue through this evening at 10 to 20 mph. Gusts to 30 mph will be possible, mainly along the west side but locally elsewhere. Winds later tonight will decrease to around 5 to 12 mph. Winds Tuesday through Thursday will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 mph. Winds during the night and morning hours will be light and variable with periods of near calm conditions.
Rain: Expect dry conditions for at least the next 7 to 10 days.
Frost: All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
