June 18, 2022/report

June 18, 2022

It’s not very often on June 18 that you can talk about chilly weather. West Porterville dropped to 43 last night while most other ag locations were in the mid 40s to the lower 50s. I’ll bet there’s a bunch of chilly campers this morning. Shaver Lake and Lodgepole dropped to 30 and Hume Lake 28. The freezing level was down to 7, 400 feet overnight. A cold low stretches from British Columbia to central California and will result in one more day of chilly weather. The other extreme will occur this coming week with widespread triple digits Wednesday through Saturday as a strong area of upper level high pressure over the eastern Pacific shifts eastward into the western US, driving the low northeastward into Canada. By Thursday, a massive high will stretch from coast to coast with hot weather from the southeast US to California. One high center will eventually park over the Four Corners region. The clockwise flow around the high will bring monsoon moisture into Arizona and New Mexico and points northward. The flow aloft over California will be out of the southwest, keeping the monsoon to our east. Once this pattern sets up, it’ll be with us for a while as models encompassing midweek through the following weekend all look hot under a dome of high pressure. Cooler weather probably won’t occur until about the 28th.

Forecast: Mostly clear with occasional high clouds through Monday. mostly clear and hot Tuesday through Saturday.

Two Week Outlook:  June 25 through July 1: The overall pattern is for high pressure with above average temperatures. This model also shows the beginning of the monsoon season. So far, a southwesterly flow will maintain dry conditions for central California with an increasing chance of thunderstorms over Arizona and New Mexico.

June:  This model shows a high center over New Mexico and Texas extending into California for marginally above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model is hinting at a possible active monsoon season this year once we get into July and August. It’s possible we could see more than the usual amount of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but the valley will be typically dry with above average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: Winds today will be out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with local gusts to 25 mph this afternoon and evening. Winds tonight through Monday will be out of the northwest at 5 to 15 mph afternoons and evenings and 5 to 10 mph during the night and morning hours.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for at least the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
