July 9, 2022/report

July 9, 2022

Central California remains sandwiched between a trough of low pressure off the coast of the Pacific Northwest and a high center which is slowly drifting into the Four Corners region. The high will continue to expand slowly into California, setting up a multi day heat wave beginning Sunday as hotter locations reach the century mark. Widespread triple digits can be expected beginning Monday and lasting through all of next week and possibly through next weekend. Readings will soar into the 103 to 107 degree range each day. The clockwise rotation of the high will turn the winds from the current southwesterly direction to south and possibly southeast. This will begin to rotate monsoon moisture into the deserts of southern California and up the Sierra Nevada beginning Tuesday, giving a daily chance of isolated thunderstorms over the crest of the Sierra Nevada and occasional high clouds over the valley floor. This is a classic summer configuration which generally shows up several times during the summer months. I don’t see any chance of cooling until possibly after next weekend as the high shifts further east, allowing a shallow layer of marine air to move down the valley.

Forecast: Mostly clear with a warming trend through Monday. mostly clear and hot Monday night through Saturday.

Two Week Outlook:  July 16 through July 22  This model continues to indicate upper level high pressure will be over much of the western states with an active monsoon in the Desert Southwest. It’s possible some of this moisture may leak into southern and central California for a chance of isolated thunderstorms over the high Sierra and occasional cloud cover over the valley floor. Temperatures will remain somewhat above average with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June:  This model shows a high center over New Mexico and Texas extending into California for marginally above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model is hinting at a possible active monsoon season this year once we get into July and August. It’s possible we could see more than the usual amount of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but the valley will be typically dry with above average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: During the afternoon and evening hours, winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with locally stronger gusts. During the late evening through the morning hours, winds will be variable to 10 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Tuesday.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
