Triple digits were again commonplace up  and down California’s great valley with no real end in sight. Temperatures the next couple afternoons will range generally in the 100 to 105 degree range. Most models show the high shifting a bit further east by Thursday of next week, moving readings at warmer locations down to near the century mark as the high over the Four Corners region begins to flatten out due to a disturbance moving through the Pacific Northwest and brushing northern California. As this develops, a new high will move in from the eastern Pacific, maintaining triple digits through next weekend. The flow aloft remains out of the south/southwest, resulting in some high clouds over the valley floor. Yesterday, isolated thunderstorms developed mainly over the White Mountains and the eastern flank of the Owens Valley. The tops were visible from the valley floor. The marine layer remains amazingly shallow at around 1,000 feet the past few days even though there’s a weak onshore flow. That flow simply is not strong enough to move any of that modified sea breeze down the valley. So, mostly clear skies with occasional high clouds from the monsoon can be expected the next few days along with hot summer afternoons.

Forecast: Other than occasional high clouds, it will be mostly clear and hot through Tuesday. Mostly clear and not quite as hot Wednesday through Friday.

Two Week Outlook:  July 259through August 3  This model continues to show well above average temperatures during this period. It also shows a better than even chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms over the southern California deserts and possibly up the Sierra Nevada. The usual dry conditions will continue over the valley floor.

June:  This model shows a high center over New Mexico and Texas extending into California for marginally above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model is hinting at a possible active monsoon season this year once we get into July and August. It’s possible we could see more than the usual amount of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but the valley will be typically dry with above average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: During the afternoon and evening hours, winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with locally stronger gusts. During the late evening through the morning hours, winds will be variable to 10 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Monday.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
